The Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority represents the five-county Philadelphia metropolitan area in southeastern Pennsylvania. It serves an area of 2,184 square miles with an estimated population of 3,883,000 within that area. The five counties are Delaware, Montgomery, Bucks, and Chester counties, in addition to the core City and County of Philadelphia. It also operates service to Trenton and West Trenton, New Jersey, and Wilmington and Newark, Delaware.

Accounting and Statistics
SEPTA controls an annual operating budget of over $990 million, employs over 9,000 people, and has about 299 million annual unlinked trips. There are over 500,000 customers on an average weekday, which equals about one million passenger trips per day. The Regional Rail Division alone carries over 100,000 passengers a day.
